TOWSON, Md. – Trailing 1-0 with less than 11 minutes left in regulation, First Team All-CAA selection
Vivian Akyirem leveled the game at one with a strike from outside the box to force extra time before William & Mary edged the Huskies in the seventh round of penalty kicks at the CAA Quarterfinals on Thursday night at Tiger Stadium.
Â
• William & Mary struck first in the 30th minute on a header from Ivey Crain off a cross from Molly Widderich that beat NU goalkeeper Stam to the left.
Â
• Northeastern turned the pressure up in the second half, generating a number of opportunities in search of the equalizer, including a bid from Akyirem in the 59th minute that just went over the crossbar.
Â
• Stam did her part in keeping it a one-goal game through the remainder of regulation, highlighted by a diving stop in the 63rd minute. Stam finished with two saves on the night.
Â
• Akyirem wouldn't be denied, though, finding the back of the net with a left-footed kick into the lower left corner off a feed from
Faith Rosenblatt to level the match at one.
Â
• After a scoreless 20 minutes of extra time to send the match to penalty kicks, both squads converted on each of its first six attempts before Tribe goalkeeper Morgan Wood stoned the Huskies in Round 7 to setup the game-winner from Zoe Doughty.
Â
Northeastern finishes the season 8-4-6, earning its 13th consecutive berth to the CAA Tournament.Â
