No. 20/17 Huskies Score Three Unanswered To Push A Shootout Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Led by two goals from sophomore Matt Choupani in the final nine minutes of the game, the No. 20/17 Northeastern Men's Ice Hockey team pushed overtime for a shootout victory against the Providence Friars on Friday evening.
  • The Friars were able to capitalize in the final :37 seconds of the first period on a power-play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Huskies were able to stay out of the penalty box in the second frame, but Providence tallied another goal for a 2-0 advantage. The Friars would add their third and final goal with 9:50 left in the final period for a 3-0 lead.
  • On a nice setup from freshmen Jack Williams and Vinny Borgesi, Choupani beat his defender for a wrist shot that bounced over the Friars' goaltender to put the Huskies on the board with 8:41 to play.
  • Less than three minutes later, senior captain Aidan McDonough buried a one-timer off a deflection from sophomore Justin Hryckowian to bring the Huskies within one. Junior Gunnarwolfe Fontaine tallied on the extra helper.
  • This marked McDonough's 29th power-play goal as a Husky, just three away from the Northeastern career record held by Adam Gaudette (32).
  • Choupani collected his second of the night and sent the game to overtime on a redirect in front of the crease on a beautiful entry pass from senior Jayden Struble with 3:31 in the game. Borgesi collected his second assist of the night as well.
  • In 3v3 overtime, neither team was able to convert sending the evening into shootout where McDonough buried the lone goal for the Huskies shootout victory.
  • In 64:53 minutes of action, goaltender Devon Levi tallied 54 saves and stopped all three of Providence's shootout chances.
  • Freshman Hunter McDonald led the team with three blocks and Hryckowian tallied 14 faceoff wins to lead both teams.
The Huskies are back in action on Monday (Feb. 13) where they will face No. 10 Harvard in the Beanpot championship game at TD Garden. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
