Northeastern Finishes 11th in Final LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Standings

BOSTON— Northeastern Athletics continued its trend of competitive excellence in 2022-23, finishing 11th in the nation among Division I-AAA institutions in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings.

The Huskies' 11th-place finish came after earning 172 total points, a 30-point increase from last season, which is the highest among all CAA schools. Northeastern placed 103rd overall among all Division I schools, up 16 spots from a season ago.

Northeastern continued its tradition of success in 2022-23 with four conference championships in women's ice hockey, women's rowing and both men's indoor and outdoor track and field, while women's hockey and women's basketball also captured regular season titles during the 2022-23 campaign. Women's hockey, women's rowing and baseball all made team appearances at their respective NCAA Championships.

A successful fall slate set the tone for yet another historic winter campaign for the Huskies, spearheaded by the third straight NCAA Frozen Four appearance from the women's ice hockey team. After dominating the regular season and earning Beanpot, Hockey East Regular Season and Hockey East Tournament titles along the way, the Huskies entered the NCAA Tournament as the hottest team in the nation. Anchored by the play of CCM/AHCA First Team All-Americans Alina Mueller up front, Gwyneth Philips in goal and national coach of the year Dave Flint at the helm, Northeastern recorded a program-record 34 victories.

Mueller concluded one of the most successful careers for any student-athlete in Northeastern history, leaving Huntington Avenue as the program's leading scorer, a two-time Patty Kazmaier Award finalist, three-time Hockey East Player of the Year and the first five-time All-American in NCAA ice hockey history.

After a strong showing at the Eastern Sprints, women's rowing built on that momentum to win its ninth consecutive CAA Championship to secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, where it earned its best finish at the national regatta since 2017. Head coach Joe Wilhelm was named the CAA Coach of the Year for a conference-best 10th time while Charlotte Kershaw, Tess Miller, Iris Cotrupi and Grace O'Connor all earned All-CAA honors.

The Huskies are currently representing Northeastern at the Henley Royal Regatta, widely considered the most prestigious rowing regatta in the world, for the first time in program history.

The baseball team recently concluded its most successful season in the 100-year history of the program. With a team-record 44 wins, the Huskies earned the program's first-ever national ranking on May 1, checking in at No. 25 in the D1Baseball poll. Northeastern, which collected the CAA Rookie of the Year (Cam Maldonado), CAA Defensive Player of the Year (Spenser Smith) and CAA Coach of the Year (Mike Glavine) honors, broke several team and individual records along the way and returned to the NCAA tournament for the 10th time in school history, while three student-athletes (Maldonado, Aiven Cabral and Mike Sirota) earned All-American status.

Overall, 19 sports are counted in the final DI standings, four of which must be women's volleyball and basketball and men's basketball and baseball. The next highest (15 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings. The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
