BOSTON – Rising junior
Braden Porterfield won bronze with the US 4+ to highlight six student-athletes from the Northeastern men's rowing team who closed out competition at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
"We are very proud of the outstanding efforts our team members displayed at the U23 World Championships," said head coach
Alex Perkins. "With six athletes racing our squad was well represented on the world stage. Braden was able to get on the podium winning a bronze medal in the 4+ to cap off a great week of racing!"
Porterfield and the US 4+ battled with Great Britain for the second and third spots, with Great Britain taking silver in a photo finish. Italy won gold with a time of 6:09.19, Great Britain finished at 6:12.00, and the US fought until the very end in a tightly contested race, crossing the line at 6:12.76.
The Huskies were also well represented across other countries, as rising sophomore
Elrond Kullman raced in Germany's 4+, and finished sixth in the A final with a time of 6:20.93. Newcomers Kobe Miller and Ed Lopas (New Zealand quad) crossed the line first in the C final with a time of 5:53.87, Kystof Janac and the Czech Republic quad finished second in B final at 5:44.83, and Kieran Holthues (Germany 4-) finished fifth in the A final with a time of 5:55.86.
"Although we did not race the result we were after, I'm glad I was given the opportunity to race on the international stage again against some world-class athletes," said Miller. "I'm excited to be racing for Northeastern this season as I will be training alongside these athletes everyday, in the great city of Boston. Go Huskies!"
