BOSTON -- Northeastern University student-athletes continue to excel academically and achieve at a level higher than their Division I peers, according to data released Tuesday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Northeastern's 2022-23 overall APR was 990, six points above the national four-year Academic Progress Rate of 984.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team's APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn one point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and one point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term.
This is the third consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The APR included data from the 2019-20 academic year through the 2022-23 academic year.
Highlights from Northeastern's 2022-23 APR report include:
• Northeastern had 10 teams (baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, field hockey, women's ice hockey, women's rowing, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's track and field) earn a perfect APR score of 1000.
• Three teams (baseball, women's cross country, field hockey) were honored with Public Recognition Awards, which go to teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport.
• Of the 15 Northeastern teams included in the APR report, 11 of them posted a four-year APR score at or above the national average for their respective sports (indoor and outdoor track and field combined).
• Every Northeastern team had an APR score above 960.
• The multi-year APR rates for men's and women's basketball are both above the national average (men's basketball national average - 968; Northeastern – 1000 | women's basketball national average – 981; Northeastern – 1000).
