Story Links

BOSTON — With a game-winning goal in overtime, junior Dylan Hryckowian lifted the No. 12/11 Northeastern men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over UMass on Saturday night, giving the Huskies game on of their weekend series.

Junior goaltender Lawton Zacher earned his eighth win of the season, stopping 22 shots in the victory.

Northeastern capitalized on its first power-play opportunity just six minutes into the game. With only two seconds remaining on the man advantage, senior Vinny Borgesi unleashed a shot from the point that deflected off freshman Jacon Mathieu for his fourth goal of the season, giving NU a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Joe Connor picked up the secondary assist.

Following a scoreless second period, Northeastern doubled its lead early in the third on another power-play strike. NU controlled possession in offensive zone as Hryckowian found Borgesi at the point. Borgesi carried the puck into the slot and fired home his second goal of the night, extending the lead to 2-0. Connor recorded his second assist of the game on the sequence.

The Minutemen battled back late in the third period, erasing the two-goal deficit in the final six minutes of regulation. Cam Dunn and Jack Musa each found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime.

With 1:15 remaining in the extra frame, Hryckowian took matters into his own hands. The junior carried the puck from the far blue line all the way to the crease, beating the UMass goaltender five-hole for the game-winner. Senior Dylan Finlay and Mathieu collected the assists as the Huskies claimed the 3-2 victory.

Northeastern will return home tomorrow to close out its weekend series with UMass, with puck drop set for 5:30 p.m. on NESN.
