AMHERST, Mass. – The Northeastern men's hockey team (2-1-0) received goals from four different scorers and freshman goaltender
Sam Caulfield made 34 saves as the Huskies responded in a big way against No. 19/18 Massachusetts (2-3-1), knocking off the Minutemen on Saturday night at the Mullins Center, 4-1.
Â
Giacomo Martino led the way with a goal and two assists, while
Miguel Marques (one goal, one assist) and
Tyler Fukakusa (two assists) also logged multi-point nights. The Northeastern power play took advantage of its opportunities, going 2-of-6 on the night with goals from
Amine Hajibi and
Dawson Sharkey's first collegiate goal, while the penalty kill was 6-of-7 in the game.Â
Â
For the second straight night, it was Marques who got Northeastern going, drawing first blood less than five minutes into the game with his second of the season. After Martino battled to keep the puck in at the blue line, he fed Fukakusa down low. Martino then headed towards the net, took a return pass from Fukakusa and fired a shot on goal that Marques got a piece of on its way past UMass goaltender Ethan Eskit (34 saves) for the score.
Â
Massachusetts leveled the game at one midway through the second period when Gavin Cornforth netted his second of the weekend, taking a pass from Jasper Kuhta and tucking one past Caulfield for the score.
Â
Northeastern retook the lead late in the second period, capitalizing on a major penalty for spearing as Hajibi ripped a feed from
Jacob Mathieu over Eskit's shoulder for a 2-1 lead.
Â
The third period was all Huskies, who controlled play from start to finish and extended the lead to 3-1 with another power play strike, this one from Sharkey with a one-timer in the slot off a pass from Fukakusa. Martino closed out the scoring with an empty netter late in regulation.
Â
The Huskies will head to Cambridge for an exhibition contest against Harvard on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
