BOSTON – The Northeastern men's rowing team competed for the first and only time during the fall season this weekend at the prestigious Head of the Charles. The Huskies had four boats entered across two races during the weekend, highlighted by a eighth place finish overall by the first varsity in the Championship Eights on Sunday.
Â
The first varsity, coxed by
Alex Stamas and stroked by Maximillian Brill, finished the course with a time of 13:42.589, good for fifth among collegiate entries and nine seconds off the Dutch eight, who are the current world record holders in the 2k.
Â
"The team rowed well this weekend, finishing in the top section of the field in the first, second, third and fourth level eights," said head coach
Alex Perkins. "The Head of the Charles gives us a great indicator of where we stand at the beginning of the season and helps assess where we need to improve. The team looks forward to getting back to work this week."
Â
NU's second varsity, meanwhile, finished at 13:58.127, paced by coxswain
Connor Burke, fourth among JV entries.
Â
Northeastern's 3V and 4V opened the weekend on Saturday, competing in the Club Eights. The 3V, coxed by
AJ Hwangbo and stroked by freshman
Rupert Evans, finished the day second overall only behind Harvard. NU clocked in with a time of 15:02.345 on the 4702-meter course, just behind the Crimson and five seconds ahead of the rest of the field, while the 4V finished 11th (15:48.847) and second among Club B entries.
Â
During the weekend, the men's and women's rowing programs honored former boatman Rick Schroeder with a boat dedication. Schroeder, who rowed for Northeastern, recently retired after decades of service to the university.
