ALLSTON, Mass. — The No. 17/20 Northeastern men's hockey team dropped an exhibition contest to the Harvard Crimson, 4-1, on Friday evening at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Sophomore
Jack Pechar scored off assists from
Giacomo Martino and
Joe Connor and freshman netminder
Sam Caulfield made 14 saves in two periods of play.
Harvard opened the scoring, getting on the board 8:09 into the first frame by tipping it past goaltender Ben Charette. The Crimson doubled its lead at 10:19 on the power play with a one-timer.
The Huskies went on a power play of their own after sophomore
Amine Hajibi was held up when trying to break away for a loose puck in the Crimson zone at 12:05 in the first. Just seconds after the man-advantage ended, Connor speared a puck to Martino in the Crimson zone. Martino then slid it out toward the blue line, where Pechar found it and glided in before picking his spot just past the outstretched glove of Harvard's netminder, Ben Charette.
Chasing a 2-1 game in the second, Martino entered the offensive zone on the right side and saucered a puck to a streaking
Joel Kjellberg, who tried the goaltender's blocker side but was denied. Freshman
Marcus Kearsey generated multiple chances by himself during a 4-on-4 opportunity, but he was twice denied in the frame. The Crimson took advantage of their defensive success by going down the other end of the ice and scoring at 15:15 off a one-timer from the point that went bar-down.
Sophomore Matthew DellaRusso (12 saves) replaced Caulfield in net to begin the third period. He was tested early and on a breakout the Crimson originally put one past him. The Huskies challenged, however, and the goal was called off for offsides. Harvard would successfully light the lamp with 5:32 remaining to cap the scoring.
Northeastern will next leave the Boston city limits for a weekend series with Boston College beginning Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Conte Forum.
