SARASOTA, Fla. – The No. 7 Northeastern men's rowing team made a statement on Friday at Day One of the Sarasota 2K, going stroke-for-stroke against No. 6 Brown and No. 10 Yale across three boats including a win over the Bears in the first varsity to claim the Dreissigacker Cup.
Â
Northeastern logged second place finishes overall in both the first and second varsity races, with the margin of victory less than two seconds in each, while the third varsity finished first overall in its race with an open water victory.
Â
The final race of the day lived up to the hype in the first varsity, with Yale jumping out to a two-seat lead early, with Northeastern and Brown level through the opening 500-meters. As the Huskies, led by coxswain
Alex Stamas and stroke
Julian Leonhardt, upped their rate, they built a slight lead on the Bears while keeping the Bulldogs in their sights during the middle 500 to lead Brown by 0.5 seconds at the split. Northeastern pressed in the third 500 to keep the Bears at bay while starting to move on Yale, setting up a dog fight down the stretch before Yale held on for the win at 5:41.35 with Northeastern (5:42.04) nipping Brown (5:42.06) by a bow ball for the Cup.
Â
With the win, Northeastern secures the Dreissigacker Cup for the 26th time in program history and first since 2023.
Â
Earlier in the afternoon, Yale got out to a hot start in the second varsity, leading the field with Northeastern two seats back of Brown for second in the first 500-meters. The Huskies, coxed by
Connor Burke, stayed with the Bears entering the body of the race, with just 0.6 seconds separating the two at the midway mark as both crews maintained contact with the Bulldogs. As Brown made its move in the third 500 to take the lead, Northeastern answered the call, going stroke for stroke with the Bears to overtake Yale for second place entering the final 500. That's where Northeastern made its final push, extending its advantage over Yale to open water before Brown held off the Huskies for the win by less than two seconds at 5:48.40.
Â
Stroked by
Max Jarvie, the third varsity attacked its race from the very beginning, establishing early control to take a half-length lead on Yale through the opening 500 meters. The advantage extended out to a full length in the second 500 as the Huskies held a three second lead on the Bears and Bulldogs at the midway mark of the race. Northeastern kept the foot on the gas the rest of the way, building out an open water lead to make it a race for second place with the Huskies crossing at 5:55.81, six seconds ahead of Brown (6:01.91).
Â
The Huskies will close out racing in Sarasota on Saturday against No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Harvard, No. 6 Brown, No. 8 Stanford, and No. 10 Yale. Racing begins with the third varsity at 10:50 a.m., followed by the 2V (11:30 a.m.) and 1V (12:10 p.m.).
