SEATTLE – The No. 9 Northeastern men's rowing team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday at the Windemere Cup at Montlake Cut against No. 1 Washington and the Great Britain National Team.
Â
The first varsity started quickly, leading Washington by less than a second through 500 meters with the GB National Team close behind. Washington made a move in the second 500, overtaking the Huskies for the lead with Northeastern maintaining contact approaching the midway mark of the race. The top crew in the country continued to dictate the pace down the stretch while Great Britain pushed ahead of the Huskies for second, sending Northeastern into third at 5:35.914.
Â
The Windermere Cup got its start in 1987, when Windermere Real Estate founder John Jacobi joined up with the University of Washington to expand the annual rowing event held in conjunction with the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day parade. It features some of the best teams in the world and has become one of the world's premier rowing events and a staple of Seattle's rowing community.
Â
The Northeastern men's team made its second ever appearance at the Windemere Cup, and first since 2003 when the Huskies competed against Washington and the Poland National Team.Â
Â
Northeastern's second varsity, racing against two Washington boats, led the way in the opening 500 meters at 1:20.90 before Washington took control in the middle 500. Northeastern  hung tough, maintaining contact over the final 1000 meters before finishing third at 5:47.448.
Â
The Huskies will kick off postseason competition at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 17 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The day begins with morning heats followed by third level, petite and grand finals in the afternoon.
