NARRAGANSETT, R.I. - The Northeastern swim & dive team will participate in the 17th annual Swim Across America at Roger Wheeler State Beach this Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9:30 a.m. The swimmers will participate in the mile, and the divers will participate in the half-mile swim. Â
Founded in 1987, Swim Across America is a nonprofit organization that raises money for cancer research and clinical trials beyond surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Hosted in 26 different locations, each unique charity swim event partners with a local research or academic hospital to act as the doner. Swim Across America has raised over $150 million in cancer research and patient programs.Â
The Rhode Island Open Water Swim at Roger Wheeler State Beach benefits gynecological and breast cancer research at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. Since 2010, the open water charity swim has raised over $3 million for cancer research. Â
Currently, Northeastern swim & dive has raised $11,918, as senior Bella Busconi leads the Rhode Island fundraising by raising $5,162.Â
