Registration
• Registration for the upcoming semester begins on specified dates assigned by the Northeastern Registrar’s office.
• Student-athletes may begin to register on the first day of undergraduate registration.
• Prior to the start of registration, coaches are sent a memo reminding them of important upcoming registration dates and are requested to remind their teams of these important dates.
• All student-athletes will be required to meet with their academic advisor prior to registration for advice and guidance on specific major requirements, university requirements, and course selection.
• Upon completion of meeting with the department advisor, student-athletes will be required to meet with a SASS advisor to submit their course schedule and degree audit.

Degree Requirements
• MyPAWS (Academic Auditing): MyPAWS is a web application that lays out degree program requirements and specifies how your classes fulfill those requirements. In addition to listing acceptable courses, MyPAWS also links course numbers to their descriptions and displays a list of courses you have completed or are registered for to date. MyPAWS is accessible by logging on to your myNEU account and then going to the “Self-Service” page. Click the myDegreeAudit link within the Registrar section.
• Major, college, and graduation requirements: Each major has its own specific curriculum and certain degree requirements. Course requirements, elective course distribution, and achievement levels vary from program to program, and even from class to class. Consult with the academic advising office and faculty advisor for your major to make certain that you have all the necessary resources before planning your curriculum on your own or with the assistance of a SASS academic advisor.
• To be eligible to receive degrees, graduating seniors must meet all academic and residency requirements. They must also clear all financial, cooperative education, and disciplinary deficiencies.

Husky: 360
The Husky: 360 program assigns all freshmen, transfer, and academically at-risk student-athletes to a Success Coach (a SASS staff member) for skills development, support and guidance throughout the academic terms. Success Coaches work individually with student-athletes to improve their academic and personal performance at Northeastern University. The  program provides student-athletes with the support, encouragement, and academic assistance that is essential to their collegiate success.

All student-athletes assigned to a Success Coach are required to attend meetings a minimum of once a week throughout the semester. The Success Coach and student-athlete work together to alleviate academic struggles the student-athlete may encounter during the semester.  Upon completion of each meeting, a report is created to document the academic progress and personal concerns the student-athlete may be experiencing. If the Success Coach is not the student-athlete’s team advisor, s/he will share his/her observation with the student-athlete’s team advisor.  The documentation provides SASS with pertinent information needed to work collaboratively with the coaching staff, faculty, and advisors. The success of the program depends on full support from the coaching staff and student-athlete. The added assistance from the coaching staff helps to ensure that student-athletes make satisfactory progress towards their degree.

Guidelines for Husky: 360
1. Success Coaches will help the student-athletes identify specific academic, athletic, and/or personal goals for the semester, and help them create a strategic plan for achieving these goals.
2. Student-athletes will be provided with a yearly planner and work with them to create weekly and monthly schedules and to-do lists.
3. Student-athletes are required to have their planner available at each meeting with their Success Coach.
4. Student-athletes are required to give their Success Coach a copy of their syllabi.
5. All questions, concerns, etc. student-athletes have are expected to be communicated in a timely fashion.
6. Weekly meetings should be approximately 30 – 60 minutes in length depending on the amount of assistance each particular student-athlete requires.

Study hall program
Required Hours
Required study hall hours are determined by overall GPA and class year.  The required hours are based on the sliding scale below.

Freshman and transfer students
• Fall semester: five hours per week
• Spring semester (or second semester of enrollment):
Overall GPAHours per week
<>5
2.3-2.3994
2.4-2.6993

Sophomore standing or above
Overall GPAHours per week
<>6
2.0-2.1995
2.2-2.2994

Other issues that affect a student-athlete’s required study hall hours:
• Coaches have the ability to increase the number of required study hall hours for their student-athletes beyond those required by the scale above.
• Coaches can also add student-athletes to the study hall roster.  Those added students must be held to the same standards as all other students with required hours.
• If an athlete earns below a 2.0 during any one semester, regardless of overall GPA, they will have required study hall hours the following semester.  In this situation, the coaching staff and SASS advisors will determine the amount of hours required per week.
• If a student-athlete in study hall drops a class during any given semester they will be required to attend study hall for the remainder of the semester during that class time. This will be in ADDITION to their required study hall hours.

Reduced hours
• When a holiday or snow day causes the academic center to close, the student-athletes’ required hours will be reduced.

Coaches' involvement
• Coaches should have a written plan of how they will hold their students accountable and enforce the study hall requirements set-up by the SASS office and the Athletic Department.
• It is NOT recommended that coaches set-up study hall schedules for their athletes. Student-athletes are able to set up their own schedules.
• It is not up to the coaches’ discretion to reduce their athlete’s required study hall hours that have been established by GPA and class year.

Tutorial assistance program
The Office of Student Athlete Support Services maintains a Tutoring Program for student-athletes at Northeastern University. The tutorial staff consists of top students selected from different university departments, and majors. The tutor’s main goal is to help students-athletes improve their academic performance. Tutors are required to have a strong GPA (overall 3.4 GPA) and an “A-“or higher in the course for which they wish to tutor. Tutors need to display excellent communication skills and the ability to convey information effectively to student-athletes.

Tutors are assigned based on requests from the student-athlete. Student-athletes are assigned tutors based on their area of academic difficulty and availability. The student-athlete is responsible for the initial contact with the tutor, and the tutor is expected to respond within 24 hours. Together with the student-athlete, the tutor should establish and maintain a tutoring schedule that is responsive to the needs of the student-athlete. All tutoring takes place at the academic center, Snell Library, Curry Student Center, or other academically neutral setting.  Tutorial hours can count towards a student-athlete’s study hall time.

Requesting a tutor from Student-Athlete Support Services
• STEP ONE: As a student-athlete it is encouraged that you take a proactive approach when experiencing difficulty in any of your classes either by discussing this with your academic mentor, advisor, or coach. Professors’ office hours are generally the first and best place to go for help.

• STEP TWO: A Tutor request form must be completed via the on-line tutor request website: http://gonu.com/sb_output.aspx?form=5
The Tutor Coordinator will then receive this request and within 24-48 hours send you an e-mail with the following information:
    • Tutor’s Name
    • Tutor’s Phone Number
    • Tutor’s E-mail Address
    • Statement explaining that you must contact the tutor with a week of the assignment.

• STEP THREE: It is the student-athlete’s responsibility to contact the tutor for the initial session. The tutor is expected to respond to the request within 24 hours. During this meeting it is decided when any subsequent meeting will take place. It is the RESPONSIBLITY of both the tutor and student-athlete to reschedule if conflicts arise before their previous scheduled meeting

• STEP FOUR: If any problems arise such as an inability to contact your tutor, form a working relationship, or find a suitable meeting time, speak with the Tutor Coordinator so another tutor can be assigned to you.

NOTE: If a student-athlete does not contact their assigned tutor within a week’s time, that student will be contacted by their SASS advisor and given 24 hours to schedule an appointment. If this is not done the student-athlete is removed from the tutors list and if they need tutorial services they must re-request a tutor at a later date.

Tutorial procedures
• Hiring new tutors: Potential tutors should exhibit the following to be considered for the position:
  • Requirements: Strong GPA (minimum 3.4) and an A- in the course for which they apply to tutor.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge of content area in which the tutor will be assigned, excellent communication and listening skills, ability to work well in one-on-one or small group settings, as well as the capability to
    work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Responsibilities: Provide tutoring assistance in courses relevant to the tutor’s experience, collaborate with the student-athlete to establish and maintain a tutoring schedule that is responsive to the needs of the student-athlete.
Tutors must complete a tutorial report via Study Hall Tracker after every tutorial meeting. Complete a weekly Tutor Log for payroll and submit all hours on-line via the student employment website.

• The application process for prospective tutors:
  • Submit a preliminary application on-line.
  •
Complete a SASS Tutorial Application.
  • Obtain two references using the Reference form provided, at least one reference should be from an instructor in the subject they wish to tutor
  • Submit a transcript consisting of the classes the prospective tutor is interested in tutoring and a current resume.
  • Once all necessary documents are received an interview between the potential tutor and the tutor coordinator needs be scheduled.

TEGRITY: Lecture Capture System
Purpose of Lecture Capture: The Tegrity Program is designed to help student-athletes who must miss a large number of classes due to athletic travel or competition. Tegrity software allows professors to record classes and post them to the course Blackboard site for later online viewing or download.

Tegrity Procedures:
• Student-athletes interested in having their classes recorded must fill out the Lecture Capture/Tegrity Request Form. The form MUST be returned to SASS one week before you would like your first lecture recorded.
• If the professor agrees to record his/her classes, SASS provides the professor with a copy of the program information available via the ITS website: http://www.northeastern.edu/its/services/teaching/tegrity/, trains the professor in the use of Tegrity, and provides the professor with a microphone or webcam when necessary.
• SASS works closely with ITS to ensure the smooth working of the system.

Student Expectations: Student-athletes are expected to watch all recordings made on their behalf and are accountable for the material taught during recorded sessions. This does not take the place of discussing each absence with the professor and making arrangements for missed work.
