The Center is named after the local humanitarian and basketball hero, Reggie Lewis, who played collegiate basketball for neighboring Northeastern University and professionally, for the Boston Celtics.  Celtics Captain Reggie Lewis was revered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his dedication and advocacy for the educational, physical, emotional and social well being of the youth within the Boston community.  It is this legacy which, in great part, shapes the vision, mission and goals of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

The completion of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center marks the culmination of a project over 35 years in the making.  Although construction of the facility was initially approved by former Governor Michael Dukakis, it was not until 1993 when former Governor William Weld authorized the construction site at Roxbury Community College and designated Roxbury Community College as the custodian of the facility with the responsibility for its oversight, administration and operation.  In June 1995, the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center opened.

The 70,000 square foot field house provides Permanent seating for 3500 people, but this can be expanded to 5000 with temporary seating.  the Multi-purpose rooms, with a net  of 3500 square feet, can be divided into four separate, equal sized rooms.  These rooms also have a full sized kitchen.  The 12,000 square foot gymnasium has permanent bleacher seating for 500 with the additional  availability for 800 more seats.
