Northeastern in the Paralympics
Northeastern women's swimming and diving alumna Kelley Becherer '13 has appeared in three Paralympic Games and has won seven medals as a member of Team USA. Becherer first competed at the 2004 Athens Paralympics, but won her first medals at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, where she took gold in the 50 freestyle and won a pair of bronze medals in the 100 free and the 400 free. Becherer battled her way back to the podium in 2012 in London when she touched first in the 50 free and 100 free, and third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.Â
Becherer also set world records in the 50 free, 100 free and 50 back, and owns American records in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 back, 100 back, 50 breast, 50 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. Becherer earned a spot on the U.S. World Paralympic Championship team in April 2013 after setting the world record in the 50-meter backstroke (32.61) at the Paralympic Nationals in Minneapolis, Minn.
