BOSTON – Northeastern men’s soccer head coach Chris Gbandi revealed Thursday the dates, opponents, and venues that comprise the Huskies’ 2017 schedule, highlighted by an early-season, west-coast tour against Pac-12 members California and Stanford, the two-time defending College Cup champion.
“Our 2017 schedule is going to be very challenging,” said Gbandi. “We are all excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead of us this coming fall. It is a great opportunity for the coaching staff and the team to compete against some of the best schools in the country. The team has been working hard physically and mentally during the summer and is eager to come back in August ready to go.”
Among Northeastern’s 2017 fixtures lie eight home matches, split evenly, four and four, against non-conference and CAA competition, respectively. The Huskies will begin their home schedule at Parsons Field on Saturday, Sept. 9, with a rematch of their 2016 home opener against UMass Lowell, which turned in a 13-1-2 record a season ago and ended the year ranked No. 19 in the final NSCAA poll.
Preceding Northeastern’s 2017 home opener will be two home exhibitions and three non-conference, regular-season road tests. During the preseason, the Huskies will host Massachusetts (Aug. 13) and Bryant (Aug. 19) before kicking off the regular season at New Hampshire (Aug. 28) and continuing on the road to face California (Sept. 1) and Stanford (Sept. 3). The latter two matchups will reverse Northeastern’s 2015 trip to the Golden State, where the Huskies lost a one-goal match against the Cardinal before outshooting the Golden Bears, 15-10, during their west-coast finale.
NU will open its eight-match CAA slate on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Parsons Field against College of Charleston. In addition to hosting the Cougars, the Huskies will also welcome the defending league champion, Delaware, to Brookline on Sept. 23, before entertaining William & Mary on Oct. 7 and James Madison on Oct. 21.
Northeastern will face its remaining four CAA opponents on the road, traveling to Hofstra on Sept. 27, Drexel on Sept. 30, Elon on Oct. 14, and UNCW on Oct. 28.
Three New England rivals will fill the Huskies’ home calendar on Tuesday nights during October. Northeastern will host Hartford on Oct. 3, Boston University on Oct. 17, and Vermont on Oct. 24.
The Huskies will step away from Parsons Field to contest road matches this season against Harvard (Sept. 13) and Holy Cross (Sept. 20), in addition to trekking out to Dallas on Oct. 10 for a showdown against SMU.
