• Helped Northeastern win the Hockey East Championship and the Beanpot

Before Northeastern: Played the 2017-18 season with Sioux Falls (USHL), finishing third on the team among defensemen with 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) in his second season in the league … Also recorded two game-winning goals and three power play goals … Was named the USHL Defenseman of the Week on Oct. 9 after opening the season with a goal and two assists in two games … Also played three seasons for the Boston Jr. Bruins.

Madigan on Villella: "AJ is a very experienced defenseman, coming in with two years of experience playing in the USHL for Sioux Falls. He is a tremendous skater and a very good puck mover with tremendous edges, feet, agility, mobility, and has the ability to jump into the play and to support the rush. We're expecting AJ, with the experience he's had over the last two years, to come in and compete for a job immediately, and we're expecting big things from him."
