Prior to coming to Northeastern, Benford spent five years as Head Coach of lightweight men’s rowing at MIT.  During summers, he coached at the Riverside Boatclub High Performance Group where he contributed to the success of senior lightweight pairs, which raced at the World Championships in Linz, Austria and Poznan, Poland.  He has also served as head coach of the men’s rowing programs at Tufts University and Boston College where he was the Director of Rowing.  He has hosted and coached USRowing Under-23 development camps and has contributed to the sport through involvement with Community Rowing Inc., where he currently serves as a trustee.

In his role at the Henderson Boathouse, Benford manages the recruiting program for men’s rowing and contributes to athlete development in all phases.  He is primarily involved in the discovery, evaluation and management of potential student-athletes, where the focus is on identifying rowing talent as well as evaluating the contribution of potential oarsmen to the rowing program and to the University at large.  He also collaborates closely with Coach Pojednic and Coach Walsh on all aspects of developing the speed of Northeastern Rowing and the promising oarsmen currently rowing. Â

Benford brings more than 20 years of experience as a coach, university administrator and businessman into his role as mentor to the Husky oarsmen.  He has held multiple leadership roles outside of rowing including management consultant for Fortune 500 companies, special projects manager at a $5 billion furniture company; associate director of Career Services at Tufts University and small business owner.  The combination of rowing coaching and external experiences provide Benford a unique perspective to contribute to the development of the Husky oarsmen and the men’s rowing program.
