Nick "FlowStateGG" serves as the head coach for the Northeastern Rocket League team after an extensive coaching career in Tennis.
"I've been coaching professionally for about 10 years, previously tennis, having worked with some top ranked juniors in the US. I played tennis in college, 2nd place in the US for our division at CCRI, and then transferred to Nichols College and won our conference all years competing. I majored in Sports Management, Finance, and Economics, although I have not finished my degree.
I started studying sport psychology on my own and about 3 years ago for tennis, but quickly realized how strongly it applied to Esports too. And since I'd always been very competitive in gaming, I decided to go into rocket league coaching. I made a youtube channel focused on sport psych in Esports and tips for improvement on the mental side of the game (about 30k subs now). I've since worked up to the pro level, including a top 10 team in the world as the Mental Performance Coach. Northeastern found me through my YouTube and offered me the job, I've been with the team for over 2 years now (fun fact, they just wanted a remote position but after hiring, found out I'm a Boston local, so I am able to come in person as well).
With a sport psych and traditional sport background, I try to blend in elements from sport coaching that aren't currently as present in Esports. I'm implementing mandatory team workout sessions (also because i come from traditional sport) because I know that peak mental performance means being in good physical shape as well, and there's no better team bonding than working out with your teammates. Also very big on scenario/drill based coaching, trying to creatively replicate in game situations that we can practice in a controlled environment with the players to get more reps in than normal. When doing drills, we often involve the club teams, I really like to try to keep the whole program involved together.
Fun facts:Â I like to longboard, write (was a writing tutor as well in college, was truly just born to teach/coach ?? ) and some other games I enjoy are Valorant, League of Legends, and Chess."
