Joel Smith returns to his alma mater after a three-year professional basketball career to serve as Northeastern’s video coordinator in 2016-17.

"I am so happy and proud to have Joel Smith back home with us,” said Coen.  “Joel recently earned his Master's Degree from Northeastern, and will serve as our Video Coordinator, but his title won't do justice to his contributions. As a former captain, 1st team All-CAA player, CAA Champion and one of the best all-time teammates, Joel will serve as a tremendous role model for our players."

After a professional career that took him to Argentina and Mexico, Smith was drafted as the 15th pick in the fourth round of the D-League draft this past October by the Canton Charge.

Smith finished his time at Northeastern as the 13th highest scorer in Husky history with 1,328 career points knocking down 243 career 3-pointers, then-second-most in school history including 83 during the 2012-13 season setting a school record. Smith’s career 3FG shooting percentage of 39.9 ranks third all-time.

The sharp shooter and Leander, Texas native was named to the CAA First Team All-Conference in his senior season and helped the Huskies to two NIT appearances during his time on Huntington Ave.

Most recently, Smith returned to Northeastern in May to receive his master’s degree in Sports and Leadership through the College of Professional Studies.
