Northeastern's unbeaten streak to start the 2000 season came to an end as Penny Stanfield scored from eight yards out on a scramble in front of the net to give Hofstra a 2-1 win in an America East women's soccer matchup.
Freshman Tanya Mello continued her great start, putting the Huskies ahead 1-0 just 4:28 into the game. Mello was set up on a nice cross by Kate Mercier and blasted a shot into the lower left corner. But the Flying Dutchwomen answered less than two minutes later, tying the game 1-1 at the 6:16 mark. Stanfield's game-winner came in the 59th minute. Jerilyn Marinan sent a shot on goal that was cleared by NU's Amy Devendorf. A loose ball bounced off several players to Stansfield who scored just under the crossbar.
NU's 7-0-1 start was the best in the team's five-year history as a varsity program. The Huskies also have already set a team record for wins in a season.
