BOSTON -- Earl Hunt and Alaivaa Nuualiitia each scored 26 points to lead Brown to a come-from-behind 90-88 win over Northeastern at Solomon Court on Tuesday.
Omari Ware blocked Antonio Johnson's shot from just outside the key as time expired to preserve the win for the Bears (2-1). After Jaime Kilburn (17 points) made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left, Johnson attempted a 12-foot shot with five seconds left that rimmed out, but the ball came right back to him, giving him a final attempt. NU dropped to 0-3 on the season in its home opener.
Freshman Aaron Davis led five Huskies in double figures with 18 points. Jean Bain added 17, Johnson had 14, Toby Brittian netted 13 and Q Randall 12.
NU led 75-70 after a Tim West layup with 9:02 to play, but the Bears went on a key 11-2 run over the next 2:23 to stake an 81-77 edge with 6:39 left. Hunt had five points in the rally, including a three-pointer to cap the run. Brown never trailed again, though the Huskies did trim the lead to one three different times. The last was after a Brittian tip-in made it 89-88 with 1:14 showing. The Huskies then forced a turnover by Hunt, but Randall couldn't handle a pass from Bain on NU's ensuing possession and Brown got the ball back with 37 seconds left. Randall fouled Kilburn with 12 seconds to go.
The Huskies extended the lead to 10, their largest of the night, after a Randall layup made it 56-46 with 18:41 left in the second half. But, the Bears started to go inside for easy baskets from Nuualiitia, who was 7-8 with 18 points after intermission. He had two layups and a dunk, and teammate Josh Meyer canned three three-pointers in a 15-5 run that pulled Brown even at 61 with 13:56 left. It was the first of four ties in the second half.
NU took a 49-43 edge at halftime behind 15 points from Bain, who had three three-pointers. Brown took an early 11-6 edge as Hunt had five points in the first four minutes. But the Huskies came back with a 17-5 surge to stake a 23-16 edge with 11:54 to go before intermission. Bain had a pair of three-pointers in the run. NU extended the advantage to 10, the largest of the half, after Bain hit another three-pointer for a 39-29 lead with 4:43 to go. The Bears outscored NU 14-10 the rest of the half to close to within six at the break. Kilburn had four points in the run to close the half, and was 7-8 for 14 points in the first 20 minutes for the Bears.
