Northeastern picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association win this season on Friday, beating Old Dominion 1-0 at Parsons Field. The Huskies first-ever CAA conference victory was a nail biter, as the two teams were knotted at 0-0 well into the second period. It was NU's first win in over a month and the team is now 4-9-1 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.
Northeastern goalkeeper Mariel Wilner had one of her best outings of the season, making five saves to shutout the CAA's top scoring squad. The Lady Monarchs had not been shutout all season until Friday. It was Wilner's second shutout of the year and the junior is now 4-7-1 on the season. Husky defenders also made two key team saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
Junior forward Kristen Blake scored the game's lone goal. With just over five minutes left, senior captain Jessica Pfeifer crossed the ball towards net from the left. Then after a fight for the ball, Blake scored with a booming kick past Lady Monarch goalie Colby Owen. It was her first goal of the season.
Old Dominion senior forward Laura Beeman, the CAA leading scorer, was kept in check by the NU defense. Despite three shots on goal, she was held scoreless.
Overall, NU out shot Old Dominion 13-10 and recorded eight shots on goal to Old Dominion's six. The Lady Monarchs are now 10-3-0 with a 4-2-0 conference record.
Northeastern will try to make it two in a row this Sunday at Parsons field against William and Mary. The game will start at 1 p.m.
