Northeastern lost its 11th game of the season on Thursday to Virginia Commonwealth. The Huskies fell 1-0 to the top team in the Colonial Athletic Conference at Parsons Field, dropping their record to 6-11-1 overall and 3-7-0 in the CAA. NU was unable to score on any of its nine shots while VCU recorded goals on three of 12 shots.
The first goal came in the fifteenth minute when sophomore Haley Morwood scored off a pass from Leigh Anthony. It was Morwood's third goal of the season.
Despite multiple VCU scoring opportunities, Senior Mariel Wilner kept the Rams scoreless for the next 28 minutes. Wilner finally relented as the first period came to a close. Francesca Gioeli was in the right place at the right time as she collected a rebound off the crossbar and blasted in past Wilner. It was her first goal of the season.
Perhaps Northeastern's best scoring chance came towards the end of the first period when Virginia Commonwealth was called for a handball just a few feet away from the goal. However, Hanna Olsson's penalty kick went wide and Northeastern remained unable to score. As the Huskies went to the locker room at half, they trailed 2-0.
The Rams got an insurance goal right out of the gates in the second half. Pernilla Jansson put VCU up 3-0 in the first minute of the period. It would be the final score of the match.
Wilner played admirably, recording nine saves and halting multiple VCU onslaughts. She is now 5-10-1 overall. Virginia Commonwealth goalkeeper Emily Niman recorded her second shutout of the season and evened her record at 2-2-2 on the year.
The Huskies will celebrate senior day this Saturday at their last game of the season. Captains Tara McLarney and Jessica Pfeifer, as well as Felippa Petruccelli, Jaclyn Spellman, and Wilner will be honored before the game. NU will finish up the season at Parsons Field against James Madison at 1 p.m.
