Despite a massive offensive outburst, the Northeastern women's soccer team fell to George Mason 6-5 in overtime on Friday. The Huskies scored more goals Friday night than they had in the last eight games, yet a victory was not in the cards. It was the Huskies fourth loss in a row.
NU and the Patriots went back and forth, alternating goals throughout the game. Junior forward Kristen Kowalik began the Husky attack early, scoring an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game.
George Mason responded quickly when Laura Salichs' shot slipped in from 30 yards away at 12:49.
Freshman Brenna Matthews put NU back in the lead when her header from the goal line went past Olivia Brown and into the net in the 22nd minute. It was her second goal of the season.
The Patriots leading scorer, Rachel Wiggins, tied it up just seconds later with her first goal of the game and sixth of the season.
Forward Siobhan Howard's first goal of the season put NU back ahead in the 30th minute, but George Mason responded quickly. Five minutes after Howard's goal Kristin Portell's first goal of the season off a penalty kick evened the score.
Freshman Laura Neuburger's first career goal was the final score of the period and put NU up 4-3 going into the half.
The scoring eruption came back to earth for most of the second half, as there wasn't a goal scored until the 30th minute of the period. Rachel Wiggins' header at 74:33 represented her second goal of the game and was assisted by Amy Alecci.
Two minutes later, freshman defender Hanna Olsson scored her second career goal off a free kick. She also had two assists on the night.
George Mason found a saving grace in Danielle MacDonald when she scored the game-tying goal at 78:00, which sent the game into overtime. Wiggins assisted on the score.
The adrenaline filled match went into overtime, with neither team able to put it away. Only four minutes into the period, however, it was over. Nilani Duarte's deflection into the goal gave the Patriots a win and NU yet another heartbreaking loss.
Despite allowing six goals, NU goalie Mariel Wilner made a remarkable 14 saves, more than she had made the entire season. She is now 3-7-1 on the season.
George Mason pulled net minder Olivia Brown after a first half in which she saved only two of six shots. Kasey Davenport took over in the second period and allowed NU's only shot on goal to slip by her.
Northeastern was out shot 30-10 on the night, but the Huskies took advantage of their few opportunities to score a season high five goals.
NU is still looking for its first CAA win, going 0-4 thus far. The team is 3-8-1 overall, its worst start since 1998. The Huskies will look to come up with their first conference win at Towson this Sunday at 1 p.m
