Senior Jose Juan Barea led six players in double figures with 23 points as Northeastern rolled to a 105-57 men's basketball non-conference victory played Tuesday night at Solomon Court. The Huskies shot an impressive 63.6 percent from the floor on 42 of 66 shooting for the night, including a 12 for 21 effort (57.1 percent) on three-point field goals.
Northeastern (3-0) jumped out to an early 26-4 lead in the game's opening five minutes of play by sinking their first 10 field goal attempts. Barea, who converted his first four shots, had 10 points in the first 3:05 of play. The Huskies would extend their advantage over the Lasers (2-1) to 27 points at the break by closing the half on a 9-0 run in the final 3:01. Barea finished the half with 17 of his game-high 23, while senior Aaron Davis scored nine and the team took advantage of its defensive stops, scoring 25 points off turnovers.
The Huskies steadily increased their margin throughout the second half, crossing the 100-point marker for the first time since Nov. 26, 2002 in a 104-50 victory over Suffolk. Aaron Davis finished the game with 12 points, while junior Bennet Davis turned in 18, junior Bobby Kelly chipped in with 11 and senior Janon Cole and junior Adrian Martinez each notched 12 points. Sophomore Shawn James scored eight points and blocked five shots, as he now trails Husky-legend Reggie Lewis by just three for the school's all-time record (155). Barea, meanwhile, now holds sole possession of second place in NU's annals for career assists with 507. Andre LaFleur (1983-87) holds the record with 894.
Freshman Chad Carvoulis led Lasell with 14 points on a five of eight shooting clip, while fellow freshman Jose Guitian turned in a 10-point effort. The Lasers struggled from the floor, converting just 18 of 61 field goals (29.5 percent), while committing 24 turnovers. Senior Michael Unwin manned the boards for Lasell, recording six rebounds (five offensive).
Northeastern heads west this weekend for the Golden Bear Classic hosted by the University of California in Berkeley, Calif. The Huskies square off with Cal State Northridge on Friday evening at 8 p.m. (EST) and then face either California or Northern Colorado Saturday in the second round.
