Caitlin Whelan scored two goals in a game for the third time this season, as Northeastern beat Long Island University 2-1 on Sunday at Parsons Field. The freshman has been on fire since the beginning of the season, scoring six of NU's nine goals this season.
The game was scoreless until the twenty-eighth minute, when Whelan knocked a shot past Long Island's oncoming goalie to give the Huskies an early lead. Kristen Blake was credited with the assist. At half, Northeastern was ahead 1-0.
However, the lead would vanish only six minutes into the second half after Allison Andreano's header snuck past NU goalie Mariel Wilner. It would be the only goal she allowed all day, but nonetheless the score was knotted at one.
The Blackbirds' lead was short-lived though. Eight minutes later, Whelan scored her second goal off of a beautiful feed from Jackie Spellman. It was Whelan's sixth goal and Spellman's second assist on the year. The goal also represented the last of Whelan's five shots in the game.
Both goalies played admirably, saving five shots a piece. LIU goalie, Felicia Amaral, allowed only her second and third goals of the season. She is now 3-2 this season, while Wilner is 3-1.
The Huskies are now 3-2 and will face Miami-Ohio this Thursday at the Harvard Crimson Tournament in Cambridge. Miami-Ohio is coming off a major upset of No. 17 Michigan. The team will then play Big Ten champion Ohio State on Saturday and No. 11 Boston College Wednesday. BC will be the highest ranked opponent NU women's soccer has ever faced.
