The Northeastern women's soccer team was shutout 3-0 by Miami-Ohio on a dreary and rainy Thursday in Cambridge. The clouds were dark and the field was soaked from a morning storm, as the second match of the Harvard Invitational got under way. Miami-Ohio came into the game having scored only one goal in their first five games. This trend would come to an abrupt end against the Huskies.
After going scoreless for nearly the entire first half, junior Katie Boyd scored a goal for Miami in the final minute of the period. Junior defender Abby Whitaker was credited with the assist. The RedHawks led 1-0 at half as the rain began to pelt down once again.
Both teams came out of the gates sluggish after a shortened intermission and the game went scoreless for a full 20 minutes. However, at the 64-minute mark Kathleen Vistica broke away and raced towards the goal. NU goalie, Mariel Wilner, rushed out towards the junior forward in an attempt to strip the ball, but in doing so tackled Vistica inside the box. The referee called Wilner out on the foul and awarded Vistica with a penalty kick. Vistica's resulting kick barely snuck the past the outstretched fingertips of Wilner.
As the skies continued to pour, the Huskies mounted multiple attacks with five shots on goal in the second half. Yet none of these opportunities translated to a score.
Wilner was then pulled in favor of junior goalkeeper Annie Petrofsky. The final dagger to the heart was a late goal on Petrofsky at 88:26 by Lindy Slinger. Vistica assisted on the score.
Neither Husky goalie had a single save. Miami's only shots on goal were there scores. Wilner allowed two and Petrofsky one. The RedHawks goalie, Terry Leigh saved all eight shots fired at her, giving the senior her first shutout and second victory of the season.
Caitlin Whelan and Jessica Pfeifer each had two shots on goal to lead the team. Whelan is the teams leading scorer thus far in the 2005 campaign.
Northeastern will face 2004 Big Ten champion Ohio State on Saturday in the second match of the Harvard Invitational. They will then face no. 11 Boston College next week. BC will be the highest ranked opponent NU has ever faced.
