The Huskies were held scoreless for the second consecutive game in a 3-0 loss to Hofstra on Saturday at Parsons Field. Hofstra's Chrissy Arnone scored two goals on the night as well as assisting on the third goal. The game was both teams' first CAA conference game of the season.
Hofstra started early, as Arnone scored the Pride's first goal only ten minutes into the game. Freshman midfielder Edel Malone drew NU goalie Mariel Wilner out of net and dished the ball to Arnone at the last second. Arnone poked it in and Hofstra was up 1-0 early.
The second goal was at 37:51 on a break away by Larkin Hargraves, a sophomore midfielder. Hofstra goalie Becky Wachsberger passed to Arnone who was at midfield. The senior forward proceeded to push the ball up field and found the breaking Hargraves racing toward the Northeastern goal. Hargraves then beat the oncoming Wilner for her second goal of the season.
At half, Northeastern was trailing 2-0 to the 2003 and 2004 CAA regular season champs.
The final dagger in the Huskies' heart came in the 61st minute, when Arnone recorded her second goal of the evening. Once again, Wilner rushed out of goal in an attempt prevent the shot. However, Arnone lobbed the ball over Wilner and into the far side of the Husky goal. Malone was credited with her second assist of the evening.
Arnone nearly recorded a hat trick after a shot earlier in the game hit both posts but failed to go in net.
The Huskies did have a few scoring opportunities. Part way through the second half freshman forward Caitlin Whelan nearly scored when she had the ball just a few feet in front of the net. However Hofstra goalie Becky Wachsberger snatched it from her just before the freshman forward could blast the ball into the goal. Late in the game Siobhan Howard nearly scored on a rocket kick, but Wachsberger came up with a diving stop to deny Howard her first goal of the season.
Senior captain Jessica Pfeifer led the team with four shots, two of which went on goal. Whelan had three shots of her own, while Howard had two shots on goal.
Wilner played admirably making five saves on eight shots on goal before reserve goalie Annie Petrofsky replaced her at 68:44. Petrofsky had two saves of her own late in the game.
Hofstra goalie Becky Wachsberger shined in the contest, recording her third shutout of the season with five saves. The Pride is now 5-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in CAA play.
Northeastern will return to Parsons Field on Friday Sept. 30 to continue their conference schedule against Delaware at 6 p.m. The team is now 3-5-1 overall this season.
