The women's soccer team dropped another close game on Friday, losing to Delaware 2-1 at Parsons Field. The game was neck and neck throughout, but Delaware was able to capitalize twice to come up with the win. Northeastern out-shot the Fightin' Hens 11-7 and had seven shots on goal to Delaware's six.
Delaware pulled ahead early when midfielder Shelby Lawrence scored her second goal of the season off of a cross from fellow senior Mary Beth Creed. Lawrence blasted the ball far side past NU goalie Mariel Wilner. The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the period. At halftime, the Huskies were facing a one-goal deficit and a five period long scoreless streak.
The team's frustration began to show early in the second half as NU senior Filippa Petruccelli and Creed got into a small scuffle on the sideline. Both were given yellow cards, and each kept their composure for the remainder of the game and Petruccelli was in the heat of several scoring opportunities.
Four minutes later in the 65th minute, the hearts of the Northeastern player collectively dropped as Kendall Lytwynec scored Delaware's second goal of a rebound. It was the sophomore's second score this year.
However, the Huskies quickly recovered, scoring for the first time in 285 minutes. The goal came on a header from sophomore Laura Johnson off a corner kick from freshman defender Hanna Olsson.
Despite multiple scoring opportunities and out shooting the Blue Hens 8-4 in the second period, NU could not tie the game. Whelan once again lead the team in shots. It was the eighth time this year she has done so.
A disappointed head coach Ed Matz remarked, “the first half was about even. Then the second half we came out strong, but (the Blue Hens) just finished their opportunities.”
The Huskies will try to pick up a victory this Sunday against Drexel after ending their three-game home stand with the loss to Delaware. The game will begin at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia this Sunday.
