On the strength of six points from freshmen, the No. 9 Northeastern Huskies (8-1-2, 4-0-2-1 Hockey East) dispatched the Maine Black Bears (2-9-2, 0-5-2-1 Hockey East), 5-1 at Matthews Arena Saturday.
Kelly Wallace produced her first two collegiate goals, while fellow freshman
Casey Pickett tallied two helpers. Junior
Alyssa Wohlfeiler netted two goals and added an assist for her third-career three point game.
Wallace (Libertyville, Ill.) opened the scoring two minutes into the contest, slamming home a loose puck to the left of the Black Bears' net. Junior
Kristi Kehoe (Bakersfield, Calif.) initiated the goal from behind the cage, feeding senior
Lindsay Berman (Odenton, Md.) in front. Berman collected the puck and steered it in the direction of the open Wallace, who made no mistake on her first collegiate shot.
Wohlfeiler added to the Huskies' advantage at 8:45 of the second. The Saugus, Calif. native poked home a rebound from behind the net, after freshman
Brittany Esposito's (Edmonton, Alberta) shot was denied by Maine goaltender Candice Currier.
The Black Bears pulled one back in the waning stages of the frame as Dominique Goutsis beat Huskies' netminder
Florence Schelling on the power play with four minutes remaining. Amy Stech and Brittany Dougherty were credited with assists on the goal, which ended the Huskies' streak of 14 straight successful penalty kills.
Only 1:33 later, Northeastern answered right back as Wohlfeiler converted a turnover in the Maine end into the team's third goal of the game. Pickett (Wilmington, Mass.) stole a cross-ice pass just inside the blueline and put a shot on net from the high slot. Currier batted the rebound right onto the tape of Wohlfeiler, who buried her second of the day to put NU up 3-1.
Maine came out firing in the third period, but Huskies' goaltender
Florence Schelling held the fort. The Oberengstringen, Switzerland native stopped 11 pucks in the final frame and 32 on the day to earn her seventh win of the season.
Freshman
Rachel Llanes (San Jose, Calif.) added a fourth goal for Northeastern with just under nine minutes remaining, sniping a wrister top shelf off a pass from junior
Julia Marty on the power play. Wohlfeiler picked up her third point of the day with the secondary helper, picking up the puck behind the net and swinging it to Marty at the point.
Only 2:30 later, Wallace put the cherry on top of a superb effort, tucking home a tricky snap-shot from the low slot.
Unbeaten in their last six games, the Huskies return to action tomorrow at Matthews Arena against Maine for the "Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer" game at 2 p.m. Part of a Hockey East initiative to raise awareness and funds, fans will have a chance to donate through merchandise sales, raffles, auctions and other special events.
