Freshman Rachel Llanes' goal in the fourth round of the shootout propelled the No. 7 Northeastern Huskies to an extra point in the Hockey East standings after a 2-2 tie at No. 4 UNH on Wednesday. Freshmen
Casey Pickett and
Kelly Wallace scored in regulation, while sophomore goaltender
Florence Schelling stopped 28 shots and all four UNH shootout attempts. With the tie, the Huskies snapped a 26-game slide against UNH, taking two points from the Wildcats for the first time since 2002.
The tie (and subsequent shootout win) marks the first time in Women's Hockey East history that the Huskies have taken points from New Hampshire, as the league was formed at the inception of the 2003 season. Northeastern, 14-5-3 overall, remains in first place in Hockey East with 21 points and an 8-4-3-2 conference record. New Hampshire, 13-4-5, is tied for third with 16 points and a 7-3-2-0 Hockey East mark.
Freshman Kristina Lavoie put UNH in front on the power play at the 6:05 mark of the middle period. Junior Courtney Birchard did the leg work, cycling in the Huskies' zone before laying the puck to senior Micaela Long at the side of the Northeastern net. Long spotted Lavoie in front, who took the pass and quickly backhanded it up high for her eleventh goal of the season. With the assist, Long extended her point streak to 15 consecutive games, while Lavoie prolonged her scoring streak to six straight contests.
Northeastern quickly rallied to tie the score and eventually took the lead courtesy of Pickett and Wallace. Just 3:41 after Lavoie's goal, Pickett forced a turnover in front of the UNH cage and beat Wildcats' goaltender Kayley Herman from point blank range. Wallace then put the Huskies in front at 12:17, directing a
Lindsay Berman centering pass into the goal. Junior
Kristi Kehoe earned the secondary assist, her eighth point in her last eight games.
The Huskies carried the lead into the third period for the second straight game vs. UNH, but again, the Wildcats found a way to fight back. Junior Julie Allen took on four Husky defenders before firing a shot through the pads of Schelling to knot the score at 2-2 with 15:09 remaining in the third.
Each netminder stopped six shots in the final period to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Northeastern was granted a glorious chance to win when UNH was assessed a minor penalty just 31 seconds in. Despite several chances, however, the Wildcats were able to kill off the Huskies' sixth man-advantage of the night and extend the game to the shootout.
Schelling denied Lavoie on the Wildcats' first shootout attempt, but Herman answered right back with a stop on
Brittany Esposito. Long's backhander was then denied by Schelling, but Kehoe could not answer as her attempt skipped wide. Schelling slammed the door on Birchard's attempt, opening the door for
Alyssa Wohlfeiler to win the shootout for the Huskies. Herman again rose to the challenge, however, as she was able to poke the puck off Wohlfeiler's stick. Brittany Skudder shot next for UNH, but her forehand attempt was eaten up by Schelling. The Huskies' fourth shooter, Llanes finally ended the contest as her shot glanced off the upright and into the cage.
The No. 7 Huskies wrap up their four-game road trip with a pair of games at Niagara Jan. 23-24.
