Kim Carr scored a career-high 27 points and added 14 rebounds leading four Huskies in double figures as Northeastern defeated Old Dominion 100-94 in three overtimes for its first win over ODU in school history. The Huskies trailed by 10 points at the half and outscored the Monarchs 12-6 in the final overtime frame to seal the win and improve to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in CAA play.
Brittany Wilson added a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds while
Jamie Conroy scored a career-high 20 points in the win.
Old Dominion pushed out to lead by as much as 12 in the first half and took a ten point lead at the half, shooting an impressive 58.6 percent from the floor and holding the Huskies to 37 percent.
Northeastern came out and whittled away the Monarchs' lead in the second half. A jumper from
Taryn Christian sparked a 10-4 run for the Huskies to tie the game at 58 apiece with 10:27 remaining in regulation. The waning minutes featured five ties and lead changes. The Huskies took a two point lead after Carr split a pair of free throws, but Old Dominion's Jessica Canady hit a lay up with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime; the fourth time the Huskies have been had the extra session this season.
In the first overtime, Northeastern grabbed an early four point lead off two straight baskets from
Afreyea Tolbert, who stepped in to score a career-high 10 points, with eight coming in the extra periods. With 2:14 left, ODU's Jasmine Parker hit a three to knot the game at 78-78. While the Huskies would connect on the go ahead basket with 1:15 left, the Monarchs responded once more with a jumper from Shadasia Green. A turnover by Green with 14 ticks on the clock gave Northeastern the chance to win, but Carr's jumper just missed to push into another overtime session.
Once again, Northeastern took the early lead in the second frame and held Old Dominion at at until Carolann Cloutier's jumper with 1:27 left tied the game for the 13th time. The two teams remained scoreless for the duration of the period as they headed to a third overtime.
In the final extra session, the Huskies took the lead for good off a
Kendra Walton jumper with 3:07 to go. A jumper from Wilson made it a five point game, but with Northeastern up six, ODU's Tia Lewis converted a three-point play to make it a one possession game once more with 27 ticks on the clock. Walton hit one of two from the line to push the lead back to four, and in the ensuing Monarch possession, Tolbert stole the ball with three seconds remaining and hit a pair of free throws to ice the win for the Huskies.
The Huskies ratcheted up the offense in overtime, shooting 52.4 percent from the floor while limiting Old Dominion to 38.1 percent. Northeastern also forced 40 ODU turnovers and had 15 steals. The win is the first time in school history Northeastern has scored 100 points in a single game.
Wilson went a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line and had a career-high six steals to go along with her double-double, while Tolbert set career-highs in points (10), rebounds (six) and minutes (30). Christian also had a career-high eight points after earning her first start of the season.
Green led Old Dominion with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Canady posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards. Lewis had 13 points and Parker had 11 to round out the scoring for the Monarchs.
Northeastern returns to action on Sunday, January 10 as it takes on Delaware at Solomon Court at 2 p.m.
