Huskies thwarted by Towson, 2-1

Box Score Box score

The Northeastern women's soccer team once again jumped out to an early lead, but fell to Towson, 2-1, on Sunday at Parsons Field.

The contest was barely underway when sophomore defender Sandra Magnusdottir fired a long lob to sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir, who blasted a shot past Towson's Jocelyn Papciak in the second minute. The Icelandic connection from Magnusdottir to Samuelsdottir was Samuelsdottir's team-leading seventh goal of the year.

The Huskies lead was once again short lived, as just five minutes later Towson's Courtney McKee won a scramble in front of the net and fed Samantha Young, who beat Huskies keeper senior Sarah Fylak for her first goal of the year in the seventh minute to knot the contest at one.

Towson's leading scorer Emily Banes nearly got the Tigers on the board again in the 19th minute, but her free kick was stopped with a punching save by Fylak. Banes was stopped by Fylak again in the 29th minute, this time on a shot from the top of the box that Fylak made a huge diving save on.

Towson would earn a corner in the 32nd minute and capitalize, as senior Melissa Gomes fed Shawnee Nicholas to beat Fylak for her first goal of the year, mere seconds after Nicholas entered the game as a substitution.

The score was 2-1 going into halftime, despite an even performance that saw Northeastern hold a slight advantage in shots, 8-7, as well as both teams taking five shots on goal.

The Huskies came out in the second half desperately searching for a goal. Junior Erin McGaffigan got the first two Husky chances in the period, but Papciak was there to make the save on McGaffigan in the 54th minute and then again in the 55th minute.

Junior Veronica Napoli would test Papciak again in the 59th minute, firing a shot from the side of the net, but the CAA leader in saves was again up to the test. Napoli, who led all players in shots with nine, fired six shots on goal in the contest, only to be thwarted by Papciak each time.

The Huskies last chance came on an open look from Napoli in the 84th minute, but Papciak would make her tenth save of the contest to preserve the victory. Seven of her saves came in the second half, while Fylak was tested just once in the final frame.

Fylak made her second start of the year for the Huskies, and recorded five saves in the loss. It was her first start since an Aug. 22 loss to No. 12 South Carolina., and her record now stands at 0-2.

Towson moves to 6-6-3 on the year with the victory, with a 2-3-1 mark in the CAA. The Huskies fall to 7-5-1 (2-3-1 CAA).

Northeastern looks to get back on track when they head to Virginia next weekend to take on Old Dominion on Friday at 6 p.m., then square off at William & Mary on Sunday at 2 p.m.
