Box Score
ORONO, Maine - Casey Pickett notched her third goal in three games and
Claire Santostefano added her second goal of the season to pace Northeastern to a 2-2 tie with the University of Maine on Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Florence Schelling made 24 saves in a bid for her third shutout in a row. Her plan was foiled when the Black Bears tallied two goals in 16 seconds to knot the game at 2-2. Coupled with last night's scoreless draw, the teams each earned two points in Hockey East.
The Huskies (7-2-4, 1-1-3 Hockey East) and Black Bears (4-6-2, 0-2-2 Hockey East) took 75 minutes and 56 seconds to finally light the lamp at Alfond before Santostefano broke the scoreless drought. Pickett won an offensive zone draw to
Siena Falino. Falino wrapped the puck behind the net to Santostefano, who threw the puck in front. The puck hit a Maine skate and popped into the air and over goaltender Brittany Ott's (29 saves) shoulder.
Northeastern made it a 2-0 game just 1:12 into the third stanza. On the power play,
Stephanie Gavronsky rocketed a shot from the point.
Kristi Kehoe knocked the puck down and shot it on goal. Ott made the initial save, but Pickett swatted home the rebound.
Maine responded 10 minutes later when Missy Denk slotted home her first goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Sixteen seconds later, the Black Bears evened the score when Danielle Ward one-timed a Dawn Sullivan shot past Schelling.
Northeastern registered two shots in the overtime period while Maine put one shot on target in the extra session. The Huskies outshot Maine, 31-26, over the four frames.
The Huntington Hounds return to the ice on Saturday, November 20 when they travel to Rhode Island to begin a home-and-home series with the No. 10 Providence Friars. Game time on Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
