Leah Sulyma stopped 28 shots and all three UConn shootout attempts as the No. 8/9 Northeastern Huskies edged No. 7 Connecticut in a shootout on Saturday at Freitas Ice Forum. Junior
Kristi Kehoe was the only player to find the back of the net on the day, converting on Northeastern's third shootout attempt after the teams had played to a 0-0 tie after 65 minutes.
Kehoe's goal propelled the Huskies to two huge points in the Hockey East standings with one game remaining in the regular season. Northeastern is now level on points with third-place New Hampshire, two points back of Providence in first and one back of second-place UConn.
Sulyma was the story of the afternoon, however, as she pitched her third shutout of the season. The two-time defending Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week stopped Amy Hollstein, Brittany Murphy and Sami Evelyn to maintain her clean sheet in the shootout. After junior
Alyssa Wohlfeiler and freshman
Rachel Llanes were denied by UConn goalie Alexandra Garcia, Kehoe buried the deciding goal to give NU its second shootout win over Connecticut this season.
The top two defenses in Hockey East flexed their defensive muscles in the opening period as the squads combined for just eight shots on goal. Northeastern produced five of the eight attempts in the frame, but could not solve UConn netminder Alexandra Garcia, even with the aid of a two-man advantage late in the frame.
Sulyma starred for the Huskies in the second period, stopping all 13 UConn shots. The tables turned in the third, however, as Northeastern took the play to Connecticut with an 8-1 shot advantage over the first 14 minutes.
Lindsay Berman produced a scoring chance on the power play early in the frame, driving a shot off the pads of Garcia. Freshman
Kelly Wallace then drove a shot into Garcia minutes later as Northeastern maintained the offensive.
Sulyma came up huge for Northeastern in the overtime session with six stops. Only seconds after a UConn power play, the Northeastern netminder made the save of the game, robbing Hollstein in front of the net with an acrobatic glove save.
The Huskies wrap up the regular season on Sunday vs. UConn on Senior Day at Matthews Arena at 1 p.m. The Huskies will also celebrate their annual Alumni & Friends event on Sunday with an alumni game prior to faceoff. Following the game, there will be a meet and great with players, past and present. In addition, the Huskies will honor hockey alumna Missy Elumba with a banner ceremony before the game, celebrating her Humanitarian Award achievement last season.
