Box Score Box score

The Northeastern women's soccer team opened its CAA slate with a shutout in Richmond on Friday, defeating Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0.

The Huskies fired the game's first four shots before junior forward Veronica Napoli took a feed from sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir and beat VCU keeper Megan Lynch in the 14th minute. The goal was Napoli's fifth of the season.

Samuelsdottir's assist was her second of the year, and the point keeps her one ahead of Napoli for the Huskies lead. Samuelsdottir and Napoli both are now on three-match point streaks.

Northeastern came out strong and fired the first six shots of the first half, but VCU responded by reeling off the next seven straight to close out the first half. However, just one of the Rams' first half shots was on goal.

The second half of the match was an evenly matched and scoreless defensive affair. The Rams outshot the Huskies, 5-4, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.

Sophomore Michelle Sopko started in net for the Huskies, and picked up four saves to record her fourth shutout. Lynch started in goal for the Rams and picked up three saves in the loss.

With the win, the Huskies move to 6-2 on the year and start CAA play at 1-0. The Rams fall to 4-3-2 (0-1).

Northeastern continues its Virginnia roadtrip on Sunday when they travel to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
