COCKEYSVILLE, Md. – Sophomore
Wesley Gallagher took home a first-place finish as he led the Northeastern men's cross country team to a second place finish at the 2013 CAA Championship on Saturday afternoon. The NU women's team walked away with a fourth place finish, led by
Lucy Young's who took sixth overall.
For both teams, the conference meet marked the highest team-finish since the Huskies joined the CAA in 2005. The women made the biggest improvement as they entered the race coming off a ninth-place finish from 2012. Gallagher is just the second student-athlete in program history to win the individual CAA conference crown.
"The women's team had an amazing finish at CAAs," said head coach
Cathrine Erickson. "To go from last to 4th in one year is a tribute to how hard everyone is working in this program."
William & Mary won the team championship in both fields, after placing 13 of its runners, both men and women, in the top-10.Â
Gallagher, who crossed with a time of 24:42.02, was closely followed by
Zachary Krause, who took fourth overall (25:13.12). Junior
Zachary Fraielli clocked in with a mark of 25:31.18, good for a seventh place finish.
Charles Conway (17th; 26:35.03) and
Allen Meringolo (20th; 26:49.47) also earned points for Northeastern.
Young led the women's squad for the third straight race, finishing the 6k course with a time of 22:06.27.
Danielle Klein was the next to cross for NU in 13th place (22:55.48), followed by rookie
Jordan O'Dea, who took a 15th place finish at 22:59.03.
Jocelyn Hubbard (34th; 23:48.91) and Kate Johnson (49th; 24:49.44) also contributed to the team finish for the Huskies.
Northeastern had four runners earn All-CAA honors highlighted by Gallagher, who also captured the Most Outstanding Performer award, Krause, Fraielli and Young.
The Huskies return to the course when the head to the Bronx for the Northeastern Regional Championship on Friday, Nov. 15.
