Box Score
BOSTON—A career night from sophomore
Kazzidy Stewart was not enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team dropped an 81-74 decision to cross-town rival Harvard on Tuesday night at Cabot Center.
With the loss, the Huskies hold a 4-2 overall record while the Crimson own a 6-1 mark.
Stewart led Northeastern in scoring for the first time in her career, notching a career-best 25 points. The sophomore is the only current Husky to have landed more than four shots from beyond the arc in a single game after landing five 3-pointers to mark another career-best. Stewart added to her well-rounded performance with eight rebounds, four steals and an assist.
Junior Captain
A'lece Mark joined Stewart in double-digits, tallying 19 points, one rebound, four steals and an assist. Lone-senior
Jewel Tunstull recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tunstull went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line, shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe for the third time this season. The last time an NU player shot a perfect 10 was on Jan. 27, 2006, when Maralene Zwarich accomplished the feat against VCU.
Amencie Mercier led the team in assists with six and added four points and two steals.
Tiffany Montagne and
DaChe Williams contributed 10 points, collectively, to round out the scoring column for the Huskies.
Christine Clark set the pace for the Crimson with 28 points, three assists and seven rebounds as Temi Fagbenle recorded the only Harvard double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds).
Mark got the Huskies on the board first with a 3-pointer, but the Crimson quickly matched it with one of its own. Montagne landed a trey to go up 6-5, but Harvard posted a 9-0 run to establish an early 11-point advantage.
Prior to the first media timeout, the Crimson extended its lead by 15 after a jumper from Jasmine Evans, 29-14. A Montagne jump shot temporarily slowed Harvard's momentum, but another 10-2 run gave the Crimson its largest lead of the game, 39-20.
Stewart's first 3-pointer of the night kicked off a 10-point offensive run, holding Harvard to just three points in two minutes of play. With 2:38 left in the first half, Northeastern did not allow the Crimson to extend its lead any further than 14 as the Huskies entered halftime, trailing 50-37.
NU came back fighting in the second frame, landing the first two points from Tunstull. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Stewart put the Huskies within six, but Harvard slowly chipped away and eventually regained a 17-point advantage, 70-53.
Not backing down, Northeastern strung together its largest run of the night, 15-2, to come within five with 35 seconds left in regulation. Despite the momentum shift, Harvard landed two free throws to close out the game, 81-74.
For the game, the Huskies shot 36.2 percent (25-69) from the floor, 34.6 percent (9-26) from long range, and missed only free throw shot (15-16), good for 93.8 percent. Harvard shot 49.2 (29-59) from the floor, 42.9 percent (9-21) from the arc, and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the charity stripe.
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road on Wednesday, Dec. 4, to take on Holy Cross.
