NEW ORLEANS—Despite
Jewel Tunstull's sixth double-double of the season, the Northeastern women's basketball team dropped a 73-46 decision to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon to close out the Tulane DoubleTree Classic in New Orleans.
Tunstull led the Huskies with 15 points and a season-best 18 rebounds.
Kazzidy Stewart joined Tuntull in double-figures with 11, while
Samantha DeFreese logged nine,
Tiffany Montagne notched eight, and
Amencie Mercier chipped in three points.
Christen Inman set the pace for Northwestern and led all scorers with 27 points along side Maggie Lyon who tallied 20 points.
The teams exchanged points in the early goings of the game until Northwestern broke away with consecutive shots to go up, 8-4. A 3-pointer from Montagne brought the Huskies within one, 12-11, but the Wildcats drained back-to-back threes for a seven-point advantage. The Huskies used a 9-2 surge capped with a jumper from Tunstull to even the score at the 20 mark.
A Mercier jump shot gave the Huskies a 22-20 lead, but Northwestern quickly responded with a trey to regain control. With 5:07 left in the first half, the Wildcats held Northeastern scoreless, while using a 12-0 run to close out the first frame, 35-22.
Montagne opened the second half with a shot from beyond the arc as the Huskies posted nine of the first 11 points to invade the Wildcats' gap to just six. Unfortunately for Northeastern, that is the closest it would get for the remainder of the game.Â
At the 10-minute mark, Northwestern logged a 3-pointer to trigger a 14-0 run over five minutes for a 63-37 advantage. The Huskies could not slow the Wildcats' momentum as Northwestern sealed the deal, 73-46.
For the game, Northeastern shot 27 percent (16-59) from the field, 22 percent (5-23) from long range, and 47 percent (9-19) from the free-throw line. Northwestern, who won the rebounding battle 45-35, shot 44 percent (24-55) from the floor, 42 percent (8-19) from beyond the arc, and 94 percent (17-18) from the charity stripe.
The Huskies will return home on Saturday, Jan. 4, when they close out their non-conference schedule against Albany at Cabot Center.
