Huskies sweep George Washington to open 2013 rowing season

BOSTON — The Northeastern men's rowing team swept three races from George Washington on Friday afternoon in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Huskies, in their first regatta of the 2013 season, led wire-to-wire in each race on the Cooper River.

The day started with the third varsity eight. NU took an early lead and moved out on the Colonials at 800-meters to cruise to a 16.3-second victory. The Huskies crossed the line in 6:01.4, followed by GW at 6:17.7.

In the second varsity eight race, Northeastern showed a strong first 500m, taking a length lead. NU then took moves to separate the margin after the 1000m mark, pulling away to a 28.1-second win. The Huskies completed the course in 5:54.8 to GW's 6:22.9.

In the varsity eight race, Northeastern took a two-seat margin during the start, and established a boat-length lead prior to the 750m mark. The Huskies then made a push at 1000m and continued to move on GW through the second half of the race. The NU varsity finished with an 8.7-second margin, crossing the line at 5:46.1. The Colonials finished at 5:54.8.

Northeastern's varsity four enjoyed success on the day, as well. The NU four defeated Pennsylvania by 6.1 seconds, finishing in 7:04.9 to Penn's 7:11.0.

The Huskies will return to the Cooper River tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to face Pennsylvania in the 44th installment of the Burk Cup. The race schedule is: 9:00 third varsity eight, 9:20 second varsity eight, 9:40 varsity eight, and 10:10 varsity four.

NU will go head-to-head with Georgetown in the afternoon, with the third varsity rowing at 2:10, the second varsity at 2:30, the varsity eight at 2:50, and the varsity four at 3:00.
