InfographicSYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team battled to a hard-fought, 1-1 tie against Syracuse in the 2014-15 season opener on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Junior
Kendall Coyne scored the Huskies' lone goal, tipping in a
Lauren Kelly point-shot late in the second period. Northeastern (0-0-1) outshot Syracuse (1-1-1) by a 29-23 margin, including a game-high six shots by Coyne. Senior
Chloe Desjardins was strong in net, stopping 22 shots to keep the Huskies in the game from start to finish.
The Orange scored the game's first goal on a broken play late in the first period. Emily Costales raced into the Huskies' zone on the right wing and cut to the middle, before losing the puck in traffic between the circles. The disc lingered in the low slot between three Northeastern players, giving Alysha Burriss time to skate in and pounce for an uncontested shot that beat Desjardins at the 16:09 mark.
Northeastern elevated its game in the second period and eventually found an equalizer with just over seven minutes left in the frame. After some hard work in the Orange zone by junior
Paige Savage, the Huskies worked the puck back to the left point to Kelly. With Coyne screening Gilligan, Kelly lined up a shot that deflected off the stick of Coyne and into the back of the net to knot the scoreline at one-apiece. The tally was the 64th career goal for Coyne, moving her into a tie for ninth place in the program record book.
Coyne nearly gave the Huskies the lead minutes later, but Gilligan did well to slide post-to-post to rob the junior following a pretty centering feed from freshman
McKenna Brand.
In the final period, Northeastern leaned on its veteran goaltender to preserve the scoreline. On a late Syracuse power play, Desjardins made a series of huge stops, including an acrobatic blocker-save on Burriss from the right circle.
Northeastern nearly won the game in overtime when sophomore
Hayley Scamurra beat Gilligan with a wicked wrester from the left faceoff dot, but the shot struck the top of the crossbar and caromed over the cage.
The Huskies are back at it on Saturday against RIT at 3 p.m.
