Three Huskies invited to USA Hockey National Festival

Kendall Coyne in action for Team USA at the 2014 Olympics
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three members of the Northeastern women's hockey team, Kendall Coyne, Paige Savage and Heather Mottau, were invited to the 2014 USA Hockey Women's National Festival, as announced Monday, Aug. 4 by USA Hockey. Coyne, Savage and Mottau were named on a list of 69 invitees to the camp.

The National Festival, held in Lake Placid, New York, from Aug. 12-16, will help determine Team USA's 22-player rosters (under-18 and under-22) for a pair of series against Team Canada on Aug. 21-24 in Calgary, Alberta.

USA Hockey will announce the final rosters on Aug. 17 and the teams will continue training in Lake Placid until Aug. 18, before heading to Calgary.

Coyne, who returns to the Huskies for her junior season, spent last year with Team USA, helping the Americans to a silver medal at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Coyne scored two goals and added four assists to tie for the team lead with six points. During her sophomore season on Huntington Avenue, the Palos Heights, Illinois, native led the team with 68 points and became the first husky since Vicky Sunohara in 1988-89 to record at least 60 points in a season. Coyne was named the 2013 Women's Beanpot Most Valuable Player, and was a seven-time Hockey East Player of the Week.

Savage, a native of Johns Creek, Georgia, returns to USA Hockey after being invited to last year's National Team Selection Camp. During her sophomore campaign, the forward became a crucial component to the Huskies' offense, recording a team-high 22 assists, good for fourth in Hockey East. The rising junior was named the WHEA Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 28, and finished tied for 11th in the conference with 0.88 points per game.

Mottau, a rising sophomore, heads to Lake Placid after asserting herself as one of the top defensemen in the country. The Milton, Massachusetts, native was named a Hockey East First-Team All-Star last season, and was also named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team. Mottau skated in all 35 games and led NU's blueliners with 19 points, scoring five goals and adding 14 assists.

The Huskies open the 2014-15 campaign on Oct. 10 when they travel to Syracuse for a 7 p.m. contest against the Orange. Northeastern's home opener is set for Nov. 1 against Maine at 3 p.m.
