InfographicORONO, Maine – Despite outshooting Maine, 42-25, the Northeastern women's hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback to the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon.
Denisa Krizova and
Kendall Coyne provided both of the Huskies' two goals, while

Â
Northeastern (7-13-4, 6-8-1 WHEA) was only awarded three power-plays during the course of the game, but managed to convert on its final extra-man opportunity late in the third period. The Huskies successfully killed two out of their three penalites, surrendering the game-winning goal to Maine's Brooke Stacey on a power-play during the back half of the second period.
Â
Black Bears forward Jennifer More registered her seventh and eighth goals of the season on Sunday, and put Maine (9-12-3, 8-5-1 WHEA) ahead at 6:34 in the opening stanza with the help of teammate Hailey Browne. A penalty by Kelsey MacSorley midway through the first gave Northeastern a chance to level the score on a power-play, but the Huskies failed to produce a shot on goal.
Â
MacSorley redeemed herself in front of the home crowd after working a shot past NU goaltender
Chloe Desjardins at 11:09 in the second period, giving Maine a 2-0 lead. After
Chelsiea Goll headed to the penalty box for tripping nearly three minutes later, the Black Bears capitalized with the extra attacker as Stacey sunk the eventual game-winner to put Maine ahead, 3-0.
However, Northeastern responded as Krizova ripped a shot past Black Bears goalie Meghann Treacy at 16:57 in the second, scoring her ninth goal of the year. Mottau and
Lauren Kelly were credited with the assists as the Huskies headed into the second intermission trailing, 3-1.
Â
After coming back from a two-goal deficit in the final period to defeat Maine on Saturday, the Huskies looked to rekindle their late-game heroics in the third on Sunday. Northeastern kept the Black Bears at bay for the majority of the period, but an empty-net goal by More at 16:51 put Maine comfortably in front, 4-1.
Â
Coyne added the Huskies' lone power-play goal of the game 24 seconds later to pull NU back within two, but Northeastern struggled to send the puck past Treacy in the closing minutes. The goal was Coyne's 19th of the year as the junior forward led both teams with 14 shots on the afternoon.
Â
Maine's 25 shots on goal are the fewest a Northeastern opponent has posted at its home venue in a winning effort since Providence won a 4-1 game with just 20 shots on Nov. 15, 2014.
Â
Northeastern will head to Burlington, Vermont, on Friday, Jan. 30 for a 7 p.m. showdown against Hockey East rival Vermont. The Huskies will then compete in the first round of the 2015 Beanpot, held at Harvard, against Boston College.
