BOSTON – A flashy goal by junior forward Kendall Coyne brought the Northeastern women's hockey team even with Connecticut early in the third period, as the two teams would skate to a 3-3 tie Saturday at Matthews Arena.
 
Coyne scored two of the Huskies' three goals against UConn, boosting her season tally to a team-best 14 goals. In seven career games against Connecticut, she has registered ten goals, nine assists, and 19 points.
 
Lucie Povova netted her first goal of the year in the first period, and finished the game with five shots and one block. Teammate Jordan Krause fired six shots at UConn goaltender Elaine Chuli, two fewer than Coyne, who had eight shots on the afternoon.
 
Northeastern (6-9-4, 5-4-1 WHEA) attempted more than 40 shots for the eighth time in 2014-15, ending the game with 45 total. The Huskies outshot Connecticut (4-10-6, 0-5-3), 6-1, in overtime, but could not find the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
 
UConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 40 seconds into the opening period when Rachel Farrel found Margaret Zimmer, who ripped a shot past Chloe Desjardins from inside the left circle. NU was quick to respond, as Povova tapped in a puck in front of the net less than four minutes later at the 4:20 mark in the first. Chelsey Goldberg was credited with her second assist of the season, while Ann Doherty earned her first point of the year.
 
The Huskies continued to make Connecticut work on defense midway through the first period, as McKenna Brand circled the UConn zone on a power-play before dishing a pass to Coyne, who gave NU a 2-1 lead at 10:21. Brand, three games removed from a four-game point streak, recorded her sixth assist of the season.
 
Two costly penalties by Northeastern, however, awarded Connecticut a strong opportunity to tie the game. Krause and Colleen Murphy were both sent off for two-minute minors at 11:30 in the first, giving the Huskies a five-on-three advantage. One minute later, UConn capitalized with two extra attackers, and leveled the game at 2-2 off Emily Snodgrass' ninth goal of the year.
 
Connecticut darted in front of the Huskies at the 5:45 mark in the second period, as Britta Berisoff intercepted a pass and found Rebecca Fleming, who raced up the ice and beat Desjardins to put UConn ahead, 3-2. Following the goal, Northeastern head coach Dave Flint elected to substitute Sarah Foss in at goalie, and the sophomore from North Reading, Massachusetts would go on to save all 18 shots sent in her direction the remainder of the game.
 
Entering the third frame with a one-goal deficit, the Huskies rallied behind their team captain. At 3:34 in the period, Coyne took a puck coast to coast, shook off a defender with a speedy direction change, and scored the game-tying goal. Northeastern would kill its fourth penalty of the game late in the third, and headed into overtime with momentum back on its side.
 
The Huskies held onto the puck for most of the extra period, but were held scoreless courtesy of strong goaltending by Chuli. With the tie, Northeastern and Connecticut remain winless in overtime games this season.
 
NU returns to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 10 for a 2 p.m. showdown at Matthews Arena against No. 1/1 Boston College. The Eagles defeated the Huskies, 6-1, back on Nov. 8.
