BOSTON -- Despite a strong performance throughout the course of the afternoon, the Northeastern Huskies dropped a close game to the visiting Charleston Cougars, 56-54, at Cabot Center on Sunday, Feb. 22.

The Huskies held a 10-point lead with just less than five minutes to go, but an 11-1 run tied the game at 54 with 1:46 remaining. The Huskies and Cougars then went back and forth with neither team able to score a bucket.

With six seconds left, Charleston's Breanna Bolden drew a foul and sank two free throws to secure the win.

It was an outstanding afternoon for guard Kazzidy Stewart. The junior had a strong all-around game, accounting for a team-high 14 points, as well as six rebounds and three assists. The Lanham, Maryland, native helped the guide the Huskies on the offensive end by setting teammates up for open looks.

Fellow junior Samantha DeFreese chipped in 12 points on six-of-seven shooting, while seniors Amencie Mercier and A'lece Mark put together great stat lines as a result of smart play. Mercier chipped in six points and three assists; her fellow guard added 11 points to go with three assists and three rebounds.

All in all, seven Huskies finished with at least four points in the game. As a team, Northeastern shot 49 percent, hitting on 23 of its 49 attempts. Kelly Cole's team shined from downtown, where it went seven-for-16. NU's reserves also played a huge role in the game, accounting for 15 points.

Northeastern showed off its pink gear as the team participated in the Play 4Kay initiative to help raise cancer awareness and donations towards the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The Huskies had one of their best halves of the season to start the game. They scored 33 points to 16 by the Cougars. As a team, NU shot 56 percent from the floor, making 14 of its 25 attempts. The highlight, however, was the team's success rate from beyond the arc, where the Huskies went five-for-nine.

All in all, six different Huskies scored at least one two points, led by Mark's nine. She went a remarkable three-for-four to start the game, all of which were from downtown. DeFreese joined Mark at the top of the stat sheet with eight points of her own, connecting on all four of her attempts from the floor. Along with Mark and DeFreese, Stewart had a stellar opening stanza, scoring four points while corralling five rebounds and assisting on two buckets.

Next up for Northeastern is a two-game road trip, starting Friday, Feb. 27 when the team heads to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to square off against the James Madison Dukes. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip. Two days later, on Sunday, March 1, the team is set to face the Tribe of William & Mary.
