BERKELEY, Calif. – Pitted against its second Pac-12 team in three days, the Northeastern men's soccer team found itself in an uphill battle against California during most of the afternoon as the Huskies were defeated by the Golden Bears, 3-0, on Sunday.

Forwards Frantzdy Pierrot and Khori Bennett combined for nine of Northeastern's 15 shots and four of the Huskies' six shots on goal. Christian McKenna provided two more shot attempts as a reserve, appearing in 36 minutes during Sunday's game.

Christian Thierjung and Paul Salcedo each enjoyed three-point afternoons for California (2-1-0) as the Golden Bears matched their season-high production of three goals. Samuel Ebstein's 17th-minute goal in the first half turned out to be all that California needed as the game progressed.

Despite trailing the Golden Bears, 8-2, in shots following Thierjung's 28th-minute goal, Northeastern (0-2-1) dominated the final 15 minutes of the first half, rattling off the final six shots of the period. NU maintained its defensive composure throughout the remainder of the game, limiting California to just two shots during the last 63 minutes of play.

Pierrot had a chance to put Northeastern ahead early in the 12th minute, but his shot was stopped by the Golden Bears' goalkeeper Alex Mangels. Soon after, California was able to establish possession on its attacking side of the field, taking a 1-0 lead on Ebstein's first goal of the season.

Trailing by a goal, NU head coach Brian Ainscough elected to make a tactical change in the 25th minute, electing to bring on fresh legs in McKenna, Harrison Balder, and Chris Flores. After an offside call interrupted a Northeastern attack, California increased its lead to 2-0 as Salcedo fed a cross from Samuel Junqua to Thierjung, who finished inside the box.

Down but not out, Northeastern reworked its offensive package and controlled the pace of play late in the second half. Before the halftime whistle sounded, NU had amassed six shots, two on goal, and four corners, but the Huskies were unable to cut into the two-goal deficit.

Physical play was apparent on both sides of the pitch once the second half began as the Huskies were flagged for seven of the nine fouls called during the opening 15 minutes of the period. Yellow cards by Charlton Muhlauri (58th minute) and Pierrot (68th minute) sandwiched two shots on goal by Bennett, but Mangels was able to save both of the freshman's attempts.

Pierrot would come close to putting the Huskies on the board in the 71st minute, but his shot was kicked out of the net as California was credited with a team save. Salcedo finished the day's scoring in the 82nd minute when he played a through ball from Jose Carrera-Garcia, awarding the Golden Bears a 3-0 victory.

Northeastern will return to Parsons Field on Saturday, Sept. 12, for a 6 p.m. non-conference match against Fairfield.
