BROOKLINE, Mass.Daniel Arvidsson's header in the 31st minute opened the Northeastern men's soccer team's 2016 scoring account on Friday afternoon against UMass Lowell, despite the Huskies coming up on the short side of a 2-1, season-opening match at Parsons Field.

NU goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson saved eight of the 10 shots that were sent his way by the River Hawks, who leveled the match less than two minutes after Arvidsson's goal. Ben Waithe provided the game-tying goal in the 32nd minute from within the six-yard box, while Wuilito Fernandes netted the game-winner from 15 yards out during the 69th minute.

GOAL RECAPS

- Northeastern (31st minute): Gaining possession along the left side of the pitch, McKenna floated a cross into the six-yard box, where Arvidsson, running, re-directed the ball to the right of UMass Lowell goalkeeper Austin Kroll.
- UMass Lowell (32nd minute): After Ivan Abramovic's laser from the top of the 18-yard box was punched over the crossbar by Thuresson, the River Hawks flooded the box with attackers for the ensuing corner, coming from the right side. Martin Nygaard did his best to disrupt the set piece, but Ivan Blaskic managed to deflect the ball to Waithe, who barely beat Thuresson to the right post.
- UMass Lowell (69th minute): Working the ball along the edge of the 18-yard box, Abramovic found Fernandes open with shooting space near the UML penalty marker.

NOTEWORTHY

- Thuresson's eight saves are a career high. Entering Friday, he had saved six shots, three times.
- Arvidsson's goal in the 31st minute was Northeastern's first shot on goal of the match. Prior to his header, UMass Lowell had registered three shots on goal, all saved by Thuresson. The goal was also Arvidsson's first of his collegiate career.
- Although McKenna had scored two goals during the 2015 season, his last assist came on Oct. 4, 2014, against College of Charleston.
- All four of Northeastern's corner kicks came during the second half.
- Three NU players came away with cautions: Moustapha Samb (66th minute), Dan Korman (83rd minute), and Martin Nygaard (84th minute).
