POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Locked in a thrilling battle among top 15 mid-major programs on Tuesday night, the Northeastern women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort against Marist at McCann Arena, despite experiencing its first loss of the season at the hands of the Red Foxes, 90-84.

Jess Genco notched her second consecutive 30-point scoring game to lead Northeastern (9-1), which witnessed its program record, nine-game winning streak (tie) come to an end. Genco matched Marist's Alana Gilmer for the game's scoring high at 30 points, drilling six 3-pointers along the way to tie the NU program record for career 3-point field goals (245).

Gabby Giacone muscled her way to 12 points and 13 rebounds, earning her second straight double-double – the 14th of her collegiate career. Stella Clark tallied 13 points to pace the Huskies' bench, which outscored that of the Red Foxes', 23-19.

Northeastern shot 53 percent from the field during the first quarter, during which the Huskies hit five 3-pointers and raced out to the 27-17 lead by the final horn. Clark accounted for eight of Northeastern's 27 points, which were the most that NU had produced during a quarter this season.

Marist (8-3) countered with the 15-5 scoring run to open the second stanza, knotting the game at 32-32 with 5:57 remaining in the first half. Although the Red Foxes built as high as an eight-point lead with two minutes to go before the intermission, the Huskies closed the quarter with seven unanswered points to shrink their halftime deficit to 44-43.

Northeastern kept on the Red Foxes' heels during the third quarter, converting during three straight trips down the floor to charge in front, 54-53, with 5:40 remaining. However, Rebekah Hand funneled in 10 of her 28 points during the period to help Marist carry the 67-57 edge into the fourth quarter.

Resiliently, the Huskies began the final stanza by staging the 11-2, quarter-opening run, closing to within a point of the Red Foxes' lead at 69-68 with 6:31 to go. Despite Genco offloading eight points during the game's final minutes, Northeastern could not lure Marist into missing its free throws as the Red Foxes hit eight in a row to put the final score out of reach.
