CHESTNUT HILL – The Northeastern women's hockey team (13-14-3) overturned an early two-goal deficit, but the No. 3/2 Boston College Eagles (25-2-3) scored the final three goals of the game, all by Makenna Newkirk, to hand the Huskies a 5-2 loss in the opening round of the 40th Women's Beanpot on Tuesday at Kelley Rink.
After two goals by BC's Daryl Watts in the opening period, Northeastern turned the tides in the middle frame when freshman
Skylar Fontaine forced a turnover in the Eagles' zone and fed sophomore
Andrea Renner for a wrister that beat Katie Burt (36 saves) from the right circle at 4:19.
Senior
Shelby Herrington then tied the game at 10:34 of the period, firing home a loose puck at the top of the crease after a centering pass from junior
Kasidy Anderson.
After Newkirk gave BC the lead back at 13:06, the Huskies appeared to tie the score once again when Renner jammed home a rebound at the left of the net, but the goal was reviewed and eventually waved off for goaltender interference.
Newkirk then tacked on two more in the third, sniping home a wrister at the right of the net, before completing her hat trick with a shorthanded, empty-netter with 1:09 remaining.
Junior netminder
Brittany Bugalski was saddled with the loss despite a 23-save effort as the Huskies held a 38-28 shot advantage overall.
